K-Arts - KAIST Selected as a Support Institution for the National Science

and Technology Research Network

Chosen as a primary institution among the top 80 in the evaluation ranking, receiving technical support until April 2023

Providing gigabit-class research network services to outstanding domestic advanced research and collaborative research institutions

The Convergence Art Center at Korea National University of Arts (President Daejin Kim) announced that the university has been selected as a support institution for the National Science and Technology Research Network.

The National Science and Technology Research Network, supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT (formerly the Ministry of Science and Technology) since 1988 and managed and operated by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information, is a national R&D research network. It provides high-performance network infrastructure to support various scientific and technological information resources, supercomputing, GRID, e-Science applications, etc., targeting major research and development institutions in industry, academia, and research, encompassing approximately 200 organizations.

Receiving support from the National Science and Technology Research Network will enable high-speed connections and large data transfers between domestic and international research institutions through a gigabit-class advanced network infrastructure (1G-100G). In addition to this infrastructure support, it also allows access to advanced networking technology services necessary for the construction, utilization, and implementation of an efficient collaborative research environment.

The Korea National University of Arts plans to pursue fusion projects between technology and art in collaboration with institutions like KAIST and Pohang University of Science and Technology through the science and technology research network. The university is also preparing for collaboration with Austria's Ars Electronica, aiming to accelerate the production and research of cultural content in the era of the metaverse.

Chungyean Cho, the Director of Planning and a professor in the Multimedia at the School of Film, TV & Multimedia, who has been spearheading the introduction of the National Science and Technology Research Network, said, 'The introduction of this network can be understood as the creation of a vast network oasis within the university. While the primary purpose of the network is to facilitate collaboration between institutions for advanced convergent content education, we also expect it to significantly improve the diverse online educational and creative environment within the university.'

Meanwhile, the Convergence Art Center's AT Lab at Korea National University of Arts is a creation and production research institute aimed at the fusion of science and technology with cultural arts, and education with industry. It conducts creation and research in fields like immersive media, advanced medical and artificial intelligence content through collaborations with leading domestic and international companies, universities, and research institutes.
