The Art & Technology Lab (AT Lab) at the Korea National University of Arts (K-ARTS, President Kim Bong-ryeol) has announced that seven vertical short-form films, created through its creative partnership with TikTok, have been officially invited to the special exhibition of the 25th Indieforum 2021 Film Festival.
■ Pioneering the "Short-form" Format in the Digital Native Era
Short-form content—brief videos optimized for mobile devices and social media—is rapidly emerging as a next-generation format, reshaping the traditional film and drama markets.
The selected films will be showcased in the 'Indie Expanded 2' section. The lineup includes:
● A Perfect Meal (Directed by Ggyu Film): A massive viral hit that has recorded 1.9 million views on TikTok to date.
● The Air Shop (Produced by Ggyu Film) and five other titles, all ranging from 1 to 3 minutes in length.
■ Why "Vertical Cinema"? Insights from Indieforum 2021
The programming team at Indieforum 2021 explained their curatorial intent: "As offline cinema culture faces challenges post-COVID-19, non-face-to-face viewing on various digital platforms is expanding. We are seeing a significant influx of cinematic talent and imagination into short-form, mid-form, and web-based series. To explore the future of cinema in the digital native era, we curated 'Indie Expanded 2' to introduce these new formats."
They further added, "By selecting works created through the collaboration between K-ARTS—known for high-quality aesthetic filmmaking—and TikTok, the leader in mobile video platforms, we aim to examine the potential and possibilities of Vertical Cinema within a traditional theater environment."
■ Screening Schedule
The seven short-form films will be screened on Saturday, July 24, at 5:05 PM at Megabox Seongsu (Theater 2), alongside mid-form and web-based content.
