The Art & Technology Lab (AT Lab) at the Korea National University of Arts (K-ARTS, President Kim Bong-ryeol) has announced that its acclaimed metaverse performance, Scarecrow VRC, will be featured in the “Korea: Cubically Imagined” exhibition at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris this July.
The exhibition is co-hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea and the UNESCO Diversity of Cultural Expressions Entity. Organized to celebrate the UN’s "International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development," the event aims to share Korea’s creative vision for a post-pandemic future with a global audience.
■ From Sundance to the Metaverse: The Evolution of ‘Scarecrow’
Originally developed as a leading-edge research project at AT Lab, Scarecrow gained international fame after being invited to the Sundance Film Festival and the Kaohsiung Film Festival in 2020.
It was subsequently reimagined as Scarecrow VRC, Korea's first interactive metaverse performance. The work has since received prestigious accolades, including:
● Best Immersive Narrative at the Raindance Film Festival (UK).
● Storytelling Innovation Award from Columbia University’s DSL (USA).
Critics have hailed the work as a "pioneering masterpiece essential for the untact (contactless) era."
■ Connecting Humanity Through Immersive Media
Professor Seung-moo Lee, Director of AT Lab and the creator of the work, stated: "In the metaverse—which has emerged as the core of post-pandemic content—this is a wonderful opportunity for a global audience to experience the vital theme of 'human connection and exchange' through immersive media. We will continue to present works that lead global trends in advanced convergent content."
■ A Lineup of Korean Cultural Icons
Scarecrow VRC will be presented alongside other world-class Korean immersive content, including:
● BTS: The XR version of the ‘MAP OF THE SOUL ON:E’ concert.
● Parasite VR: An immersive experience allowing users to explore the iconic spaces of Director Bong Joon-ho’s Academy Award-winning film.
● d'strict: The famous ‘Wave’ and ‘Flower’ digital installations.
● National Museum of Korea: ‘The Royal Procession with the People.’
■ AT Lab: Shaping the Future of Global Content
AT Lab is a premier creative research institute dedicated to the fusion of science, arts, industry, and education. Beyond Scarecrow, projects like Rain Fruits have been featured at Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, and Cannes XR.
The Lab is currently accelerating the development of volumetric and metaverse infrastructure through major government projects, including KOCCA’s "Content One Campus" and "Cultural Content R&D Human Resources Development Project," solidifying its role as a global leader in the future of storytelling.
